Foliate papillae

The dorsal surface of the tongue is covered by stratified squamous epithelium and specialized by lingual papillae: filiform, fungiform, foliate, and circumvallate. Filiform papillae are keratinized and provide friction; they lack taste buds. Fungiform papillae are scattered across the dorsum and contain taste buds.
